Located next to the Ukrainian border, Pobeda is one of the least populated villages in all of Moldova. Although it lies within the internationally recognized borders of Moldova, it is currently administered by the self-proclaimed republic of Transnistria. The village was originally founded as Lilienthal, a German colonist settlement established during the Russian Empire, when thousands of ethnic Germans were invited to settle in southern Bessarabia and develop agriculture. Following World War II, the village was renamed Pobeda, meaning “Victory” in Russian. During the Soviet era, Pobeda was a small but functioning rural community. It was part of the Kolosovo collective farm (kolkhoz) and had a medical station, a village club with a cinema, a library, and a local shop. Like many villages across the Soviet Union, most residents worked in agriculture, and the collective farm provided employment and supported daily life. Everything began to change after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The collective farm system broke down, agricultural production declined, jobs disappeared, and many younger residents moved to larger cities or emigrated abroad in search of better opportunities. As the population continued to shrink, local services gradually closed, leaving behind an aging community. Around the year 2000, Pobeda still had approximately 79 residents. Today, that number has fallen to just 3 people, making it one of the smallest inhabited settlements in the region. Unlike famous ghost towns that were abandoned because of disasters or war, Pobeda slowly faded away over decades. There was no single event that emptied the village—only a steady decline caused by economic hardship, depopulation, and the disappearance of rural life.
