Odaia, Șoldănești District, Republic of Moldova (Not to be confused with the village of Odaia in Nisporeni District, which is still inhabited.) Hidden in the forests of Șoldănești District, Odaia is one of the smallest and least populated villages in Moldova. Today, according to official records, only one permanent resident remains, making it one of the country’s closest settlements to becoming completely abandoned. Although some official sources list 1 January 1955 as the village’s founding date, local historians and former residents say Odaia actually began much earlier, around 1917, during the Stolypin agrarian reforms of the Russian Empire. Families from the left bank of the Dniester settled here, cleared the land, built farms, and created what would become the village of Odaia. For decades, Odaia was a thriving rural community. At its peak, more than 30 families lived here. During the Soviet era, the village had a primary school, kindergarten, and was supported by nearby collective farms (kolkhozes), where most residents worked. Like many Moldovan villages of the time, life revolved around agriculture and a close-knit community. The decline began after 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed. The collective farm system disappeared, stable jobs vanished, and younger generations began leaving for nearby towns or emigrating abroad. As the years passed, the school closed, homes were abandoned, and the village’s population continued to shrink. By the 2004 national census, Odaia had already reached an astonishing milestone: its official population was recorded as just one person. More than twenty houses still stood, but almost all had been abandoned. In 2017, the Ciorici family moved into Odaia to raise livestock, temporarily bringing life back to the settlement. However, local authorities confirmed that there had been no native residents living in the village for roughly 15 years, and even today Odaia remains on the verge of disappearing completely. Unlike famous ghost towns abandoned by war or disaster, Odaia disappeared quietly. There was no evacuation, no catastrophe, and no single moment when the village died. Instead, it slowly faded away through decades of emigration, economic hardship, and rural depopulation, one family at a time.
