Caracușenii Vechi, Briceni District, Republic of Moldova Located about 10 km south of the town of Briceni, on the banks of the Lopatnic River, Caracușenii Vechi is one of the oldest documented villages in northern Moldova. The village was first mentioned in historical documents on 2 May 1585, making it over 440 years old. The origin of the village’s name is surrounded by local legend. According to tradition, the settlement was once attacked by Ottoman raiders. The invaders were nicknamed “Caracuși”, meaning “black birds”, because they appeared suddenly and devastated the village. Over time, the name became associated with the settlement itself, eventually evolving into Caracușenii Vechi. For centuries, the village developed as an agricultural community thanks to the fertile land surrounding the Lopatnic River. During the Russian Empire and later the Soviet period, agriculture remained the main occupation of its residents. In 1895, the impressive Holy Trinity Church was built, and it continues to be one of the village’s most recognizable landmarks today. Unlike many small villages in Moldova that have nearly disappeared, Caracușenii Vechi remains one of the larger villages in Briceni District, although it has not escaped the country’s demographic decline. The 2004 census recorded 4,198 residents. By the 2014 census, the population had fallen to 3,651. According to the 2024 national census, only 2,629 residents remain, a loss of nearly 1,600 people, or approximately 37% of the population, in just twenty years. Like hundreds of villages across Moldova, the decline was not caused by war or disaster. Instead, many young people left to study, work, or settle abroad, while birth rates decreased and the population continued to age. Despite these challenges, Caracușenii Vechi remains an important rural community with a history stretching back more than four centuries.
