Dereneu, Călărași District, Republic of Moldova Located around 28 km from Călărași and 90 km from Chișinău, Dereneu is one of the oldest villages in central Moldova. Today, it is the administrative center of a commune consisting of Dereneu, Bularda, and Duma. The village was first mentioned in historical documents in 1495, during the reign of Ștefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great), where it was described as a settlement bordering the estate of Hîrjova (Hirova). The earliest surviving census from 1774 recorded 36 families living in Dereneu, served by two Orthodox priests. As the village grew, agriculture became its main source of income. In 1800, the stone Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God was built, becoming the spiritual center of the community. The church was known for preserving 12 old icons and numerous historic religious books, some dating back centuries. By 1884, Dereneu had grown to 1,585 inhabitants. The village was remarkably prosperous for its time, with 20 mills operating in the area: 2 water mills, 12 windmills, and 6 horse-powered mills. Local residents also cultivated vineyards and orchards, making Dereneu one of the more economically active rural communities in the region. Like many Moldovan villages, Dereneu experienced major changes throughout the 20th century under the Russian Empire, Romania, the Soviet Union, and finally independent Moldova. During the Soviet period, agriculture was collectivized, and many residents worked on collective farms. After 1991, the collapse of the Soviet Union brought economic challenges, leading many younger residents to move to larger cities or emigrate abroad in search of work. Population figures reflect this gradual decline. Historical records show around 1,435 residents in 1904. The 2004 census recorded 1,199 residents, while the 2014 census counted 1,301 people in the commune. Although Dereneu remains an active village, like many rural communities across Moldova, it continues to face demographic challenges caused by emigration, lower birth rates, and an aging population. Today, Dereneu is a quiet village with more than 530 years of recorded history. From its first mention during the reign of Ștefan cel Mare to its historic church, traditional mills, and centuries of agricultural heritage, Dereneu remains an important piece of Moldova’s rural history. #fyp #randomplaces #moldova
