Prison 18, Brănești, Orhei District, Republic of Moldova Hidden among the limestone hills near the village of Brănești lies one of Moldova’s most unusual and unsettling buildings: Prison No. 18. Unlike ordinary prisons, this facility was built inside the underground tunnels of a former limestone mine. The mine itself stretches for dozens of kilometers beneath the surrounding landscape, creating a maze of dark corridors deep underground. During the Soviet period, the tunnels were used for industrial limestone extraction. Later, part of the underground complex was converted into a prison, where inmates served their sentences far below the surface. The prison became known for its isolated location and unusual environment. Surrounded by stone walls, narrow passageways, and underground chambers, it remains one of the most unique correctional facilities in Europe. Today, photographs of Prison No. 18 often give the impression of a horror movie set. Abandoned corridors, rusting doors, crumbling walls, and endless darkness have made it one of the most eerie locations in Moldova.
