Dărcăuții Noi, Soroca District, Republic of Moldova Hidden among the fields of Soroca District, Dărcăuții Noi is one of Moldova’s most famous ghost villages. Officially founded in 1948, the settlement was once home to over 100 residents living in 38 households. Like many small villages of the time, life revolved around agriculture and the local community. By 1997, the population had fallen to just 20 people. As jobs disappeared and younger generations moved away, the village entered a rapid decline. According to the 2004 census, only one resident remained: Pavel Ciubotaru, who refused to leave the place where he had spent his entire life. Pavel became known across Moldova as the last resident of Dărcăuții Noi. He lived alone among abandoned houses, caring for his home while the rest of the village slowly disappeared. At the entrance to the village stood a wooden cross, which he regularly maintained and repainted,a final symbol that someone still lived there. In 2007, Pavel Ciubotaru passed away, marking the end of permanent life in Dărcăuții Noi. After his death, the village became completely abandoned. The houses gradually collapsed, vegetation reclaimed the streets, and only ruins remain where dozens of families once lived. Today, Dărcăuții Noi exists mostly on maps. Its empty roads, collapsing homes, and the weathered cross at the village entrance stand as reminders of a community that quietly vanished. Unlike villages abandoned by war or natural disasters, Dărcăuții Noi disappeared through decades of emigration, economic decline, and depopulation, one family at a time.
