📍 Cumpăna, Argeș County, Romania Hidden beneath the waters of Lake Vidraru lies one of Romania’s forgotten communities: Cumpăna. Once a small settlement in the Argeș Valley, it disappeared forever during the construction of the Vidraru Dam, one of Romania’s largest hydroelectric projects. Construction of the dam began in 1960, and as the reservoir gradually filled, the residents of Cumpăna were forced to leave their homes. Houses, roads, forests, and farmland slowly vanished beneath millions of cubic meters of water, creating the lake that exists today. Unlike villages abandoned because of war or economic decline, Cumpăna was intentionally sacrificed to make way for a project that would provide hydroelectric power to Romania. The community disappeared, but its story remains hidden beneath the surface of the reservoir. During years of severe drought or when the reservoir is drained for maintenance, the ruins of the old settlement can briefly reappear, revealing stone foundations, concrete structures, and traces of a village that has spent decades beneath the water.
