📍 Amlășel, Hunedoara County, Romania Hidden among the hills of Hunedoara County, Amlășel is one of Romania’s forgotten villages. Once home to dozens of families, the settlement slowly declined over the past century as residents left in search of better opportunities, leaving behind empty houses and quiet streets. Like many isolated villages in the Apuseni region, Amlășel depended on agriculture, livestock farming, and forestry. As younger generations moved to nearby towns and cities, the population continued to shrink, and many homes were abandoned. In recent years, Amlășel has become known for its dramatic depopulation. Reports have described the village as having only one permanent resident, an elderly man who chose to remain in the place where he had spent his entire life while the rest of the community disappeared. Today, nature is slowly reclaiming the village. Roofs have collapsed, gardens have turned into forests, and many houses stand empty. Walking through Amlășel feels like stepping back in time, a reminder of the hundreds of rural communities across Romania that have gradually faded away through depopulation rather than war or natural disaster.
