The city is also home to the Târgu Mureș Fortress, originally built in the 15th century and later expanded into one of Transylvania’s important defensive structures. Today, it has been carefully restored and hosts cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions throughout the year. Throughout the 20th century, Târgu Mureș experienced rapid industrialization and urban growth. New neighborhoods, factories, universities, hospitals, and cultural institutions transformed it into one of Romania’s most important regional cities. It is especially well known for the George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology, attracting students from around the world. According to the 2021 Romanian census, Târgu Mureș has a population of 116,033, making it one of Romania’s largest cities. It is also one of the country’s most multicultural, with significant Romanian and Hungarian communities living side by side for centuries.
