Dărcăuții Noi, Soroca District, Republic of Moldova Hidden among the fields of Soroca District, Dărcăuții Noi is one of Moldova’s most famous ghost villages. Officially founded in 1948, the settlement was once home to over 100 residents living in 38 households. Like many small villages of the time, life revolved around agriculture and the local community. By 1997, the population had fallen to just 20 people. As jobs disappeared and younger generations moved away, the village entered a rapid decline. According to the 2004 census, only one resident remained: Pavel Ciubotaru, who refused to leave the place where he had spent his entire life. Pavel became known across Moldova as the last resident of Dărcăuții Noi. He lived alone among abandoned houses, caring for his home while the rest of the village slowly disappeared. At the entrance to the village stood a wooden cross, which he regularly maintained and repainted,a final symbol that someone still lived there. In 2007, Pavel Ciubotaru passed away, marking the end of permanent life in Dărcăuții Noi. After his death, the village became completely abandoned. The houses gradually collapsed, vegetation reclaimed the streets, and only ruins remain where dozens of families once lived. Today, Dărcăuții Noi exists mostly on maps. Its empty roads, collapsing homes, and the weathered cross at the village entrance stand as reminders of a community that quietly vanished. Unlike villages abandoned by war or natural disasters, Dărcăuții Noi disappeared through decades of emigration, economic decline, and depopulation, one family at a time. 📍 Lindenfeld, Caraș-Severin County, Romania Hidden high in the Semenic Mountains at an altitude of over 760 meters, Lindenfeld is one of Romania’s most famous ghost villages. It was founded in 1828 by German settlers from Bohemia, known locally as the Pemi, who established a small mountain community surrounded by forests and steep hills. For more than a century, the villagers lived from forestry, agriculture, and livestock farming. However, life in Lindenfeld was extremely difficult. There was no proper road to the village, winters were harsh, and reaching the nearest town required a long journey on foot. As younger generations searched for better opportunities, many families moved away, while others emigrated to Germany during the second half of the 20th century. The village reached its highest recorded population in 1930, with 314 inhabitants, all of German ethnicity. After World War II and during the communist era, depopulation accelerated. By the 1990s, only one man remained: Paul Schwirzenbeck, who refused to leave the village where he had spent his entire life. In 1998, Paul Schwirzenbeck died after being struck by a car in Caransebeș while visiting the town. With his death, Lindenfeld lost its final permanent resident and officially became one of the very few completely abandoned villages in Romania. Today, only the ruins of houses, the old church, and the cemetery remain. Nature has reclaimed much of the settlement, while the silence that fills its empty streets has turned Lindenfeld into a destination for hikers, photographers, and anyone fascinated by forgotten places. Просто Бельцы. Просто обычный день на БАМе. 😅 Улица Александру чел Бун постепенно приобретает международный колорит. Ребята культурно ждут троллейбус, а у местных назревает логичный вопрос: если рогатый приедет забитым под завязку (а в час пик у нас по-другому и не бывает), увидим ли мы легендарную езду на крышах? Трамваев у нас нет, но бельцкий троллейбус тоже подойдет! 🚎💨 Пока наши новые соседи только осваиваются: изучают остановки, занимают свободные ниши на рынке труда и привыкают к нашему климату. Но с такими темпами интеграции... кто знает! Не удивлюсь, если на следующих выборах битва за кресло примара превратится в настоящий Болливуд — с песнями, массовыми танцами перед примэрией и драматичными переглядками оппонентов. 🕺💃 А как вам такой новый колорит нашего города?
