📍 Cotul Morii, Hîncești District, Republic of Moldova Located on the banks of the Prut River in Hîncești District, Cotul Morii was once a thriving agricultural village in western Moldova. For decades, its residents lived from farming, livestock, and the fertile floodplains surrounding the Prut. The village was first mentioned in historical records in 1770 and gradually developed into one of the larger rural communities in the region. Throughout the Russian Empire, Greater Romania, and later the Soviet Union, Cotul Morii remained an important agricultural settlement. Everything changed in the summer of 2010, when exceptionally heavy rainfall across the Prut River basin caused one of the worst floods in Moldova’s recent history. As water levels continued to rise, the village was inundated. Hundreds of homes were flooded or destroyed, forcing residents to evacuate. After the disaster, experts concluded that rebuilding the village on the same site would leave it vulnerable to future flooding. Instead, the Moldovan government decided to construct an entirely new Cotul Morii several kilometers away on higher ground. New houses, roads, and public buildings were built, allowing most residents to relocate to a safer location. The original village, however, was never fully restored. Many damaged houses were demolished or left abandoned, and the old settlement gradually disappeared. Today, the former site of Cotul Morii stands as a reminder of the devastating 2010 floods and one of the largest village relocations in modern Moldovan history. Unlike many abandoned villages that slowly declined through emigration and economic hardship, Cotul Morii was abandoned because of a natural disaster. Its story is one of survival and relocation rather than gradual disappearance, making it one of the most unique abandoned settlements in Moldova. #fyp #randomplaces #abandoned #abandonedplaces #flood

Located approximately 70 km northwest of Chișinău, Nisporeni is the administrative center of Nisporeni District and one of the most important towns in western Moldova. Surrounded by the forests and rolling hills of the historic Codrii region, the town has served as a local center of trade, agriculture, and administration for more than four centuries. Nisporeni was first mentioned in historical documents on 4 January 1618, during the reign of Moldavian ruler Gaspar Graziani. At the time, the settlement belonged to the nobleman Nicolae Fărîmă II, whose family owned large estates throughout the region. Since then, the town has witnessed the rule of the Principality of Moldavia, the Russian Empire, Romania, the Soviet Union, and finally the independent Republic of Moldova. For centuries, the local economy relied on agriculture, vineyards, orchards, livestock farming, and forestry. Thanks to the fertile land and the surrounding Codrii forests, Nisporeni gradually developed into one of the most important settlements in central-western Moldova. Following the Russian annexation of Bessarabia in 1812, Nisporeni became part of the Russian Empire, bringing significant administrative and cultural changes. After the Union of Bessarabia with Romania in 1918, the town became part of Chișinău County until 1940, when it was incorporated into the Soviet Union. During the Soviet period, Nisporeni expanded rapidly, with new apartment blocks, schools, factories, roads, and public buildings transforming the once-small settlement into the district center it is today. One of the most fascinating records of this transformation comes from the CORONA reconnaissance program, a series of secret American spy satellites operated during the Cold War. The first satellite image shown in this slideshow was captured in 1965, when Moldova was still part of the Soviet Union. Originally taken for military intelligence, these photographs were declassified decades later, allowing us to compare the town’s appearance more than sixty years ago with today. The comparison between 1965 and 2026 clearly shows how Nisporeni has changed. New neighborhoods have appeared, roads have expanded, residential areas have grown, and the urban footprint is significantly larger than it was during the 1960s. Despite this growth, many of the original streets and the historic center remain recognizable. Nisporeni District is also known for its unique geography. The district contains some of the highest elevations in Moldova, with the country’s highest hills located within the Codrii forests. These landscapes make the area one of the greenest and most scenic regions in the country. Overlooking the town is the Cross of Salvation of the Romanian Nation, the tallest cross in Moldova, standing on one of the highest hills in the district. Visible from many kilometers away, it has become one of Nisporeni’s best-known landmarks and a symbol of the region. Just a short distance from the town lies the Hâncu Monastery, one of Moldova’s oldest and most important Orthodox monasteries. Founded in 1678 by the nobleman Mihalcea Hâncu during the reign of Ștefan Petriceicu, the monastery has survived wars, foreign occupations, periods of closure during the Soviet era, and has since been restored into one of the country’s most visited religious and cultural sites. Like much of Moldova, Nisporeni has experienced demographic changes in recent decades. According to the 2004 census, the town had 12,105 residents. By the 2014 census, the population had declined to 10,063, largely due to emigration, lower birth rates, and an aging population. Despite this, Nisporeni remains the political, economic, educational, and cultural center of the district. Today, Nisporeni is a town where more than 400 years of history meet the modern day. From its first mention in 1618, through the Russian Empire, Romania, the Soviet Union, and independent Moldova, its story reflects the history of the country itself. #fyp #randomplaces #moldova

📍 Cumpăna, Argeș County, Romania Hidden beneath the waters of Lake Vidraru lies one of Romania’s forgotten communities: Cumpăna. Once a small settlement in the Argeș Valley, it disappeared forever during the construction of the Vidraru Dam, one of Romania’s largest hydroelectric projects. Construction of the dam began in 1960, and as the reservoir gradually filled, the residents of Cumpăna were forced to leave their homes. Houses, roads, forests, and farmland slowly vanished beneath millions of cubic meters of water, creating the lake that exists today. Unlike villages abandoned because of war or economic decline, Cumpăna was intentionally sacrificed to make way for a project that would provide hydroelectric power to Romania. The community disappeared, but its story remains hidden beneath the surface of the reservoir. During years of severe drought or when the reservoir is drained for maintenance, the ruins of the old settlement can briefly reappear, revealing stone foundations, concrete structures, and traces of a village that has spent decades beneath the water. Today, thousands of tourists admire the beauty of Lake Vidraru, unaware that beneath its calm waters lies the remains of an entire community lost to one of Romania’s greatest engineering projects. #randomplaces #abandoned #ro #urbex #abandonedplaces
